ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK 1 // BIG GIRL ROOM

It’s herrrrre! This year I’ve decided to join the One Room Challenge May 2020 season! I’m a newbie, and yes, I admit I’m a little nervous - but mostly excited! For those of you that are not familiar, ORC is a biannual event where 20 Featured Designers transform a space in 6 weeks, and document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over six weekly posts. In addition to following along, everyone with a blog or Instagram account, is welcome to join the fun as a Guest Participant. So each Thursday (starting May 7 ) alongside hundreds of other talented individuals, I’ll be sharing my project here weekly on my blog and on Instagram @erinspiredesign. Final Reveal is June 11!

I’ve thought about participating before, but this year I decided to pull the trigger because a) deadlines drive me to finish a project, b) it forces me to take photos of my design projects + progress, and c) I actually have a full room to make-over! - my 3 year old daughter Charlotte has grown out of her crib (tear) and has been sleeping on her mattress on floor. So, needless to say, she’s ready for her big girl room! I promised she’d have one by a certain date and I feel like I need to keep that promise as she’s looking forward to it so much! She mentions her ‘bigo woom’ at least once a day, as any excited toddler would, I suppose!

I’ve had a very evolving vision for her room in my head for over a year, with much of my inspiration based on the images below. (Well, and a million more pinned here, ha! https://www.pinterest.com/erinmessner/charlottes-room/). But a few things remain overall: I know I want it to feel feminine, without being overly sweet or too cookie-cutter girlie. It is also important to me to incorporate vintage pieces, unique artwork or wallpaper, and textured, organic touches for a more collected, layered look. Most of all, I want it to be be playful while still maintaining a level of maturity so that it could grow with her as she ages.

So far, I have some pieces narrowed down, but other things will change as it comes together. This is my process, having to really be in the space to make the ultimate decisions on furnishings and details. My biggest questions mark is wall treatment: paint v. wallpaper v. millwork, and/or combo of these. I’ve been drooling over this particular McGee & Co Wallpaper and it seems to strike that perfect balance of what I’m looking for: feminine, delicate, neutral, timeless. But I also love a good blush wall color. However if I use any pink on the walls, I want it to lean light with neutral or cool undertones — and it would have to be partnered with something like board and batten to add visual interest.

I should to decide soon, as I have to tackle that DIY project first! Might have to put it out as a vote!

Oofta! With that all said - Here is my initial design board! Hope you can follow me as it all comes together! Here on the blog, and on IG @erinspiredesign
